Restoring an Edwardian Home on Barrowgate Road: Context & Challenges

Set on a prominent corner site on Barrowgate Road, Chiswick, this four-storey Edwardian home had been compromised by decades of poor-quality extensions. The redesign restores heritage spaces within the original house and adds a contemporary single-storey pavilion that opens onto the terrace and generous rear gardens. The result is a calm, spacious, and daylight-rich home that balances historic detail with modern clarity.

Our clients, a young family, sought to create a home that honoured the building’s heritage while providing contemporary living spaces suited to modern family life. The brief called for a better connection to the garden, increased natural light, and flexible spaces for entertaining and working from home.

Our Design Approach

We set out with a clear vision to remove the inadequate extensions and create a contemporary addition that harmonises with the existing house. The rendered extension serves as a distinctive feature in the garden, linked by a glazed connection that brings natural light into the previously dark rear rooms.

Within the original Edwardian structure, we focused on restoring key elements such as ornate cornicing and fireplaces while ensuring the principal rooms returned to their original proportions. 

Outcome

The result is a home that supports contemporary family life on Barrowgate Road, London, while preserving the distinctive character of the original Edwardian villa.

Transformed Exterior

A contemporary rendered extension with simple, crisp detailing sits alongside the restored Edwardian brick villa.

Full-height glazing and wide sliding doors open the extension to the terrace and lawn, creating a seamless indoor–outdoor connection.

Pavilion Extension

A key part of the Barrowgate Road, Chiswick, transformation is the new single-storey pavilion positioned alongside the original house. 

The extension’s rendered finish creates an elegant, contemporary contrast to the historic house, while large sliding doors dissolve the boundary between inside and out, strengthening daily engagement with the garden throughout the seasons.

Interior Renovation 

Within the main Edwardian villa, all principal living rooms and bedrooms were restored with a sensitive approach to heritage details. 

The attic was converted to create additional bedrooms, seamlessly integrated into the existing architecture.

Modern services and systems were introduced across the home to improve comfort and energy efficiency, carefully threaded into the fabric of the building without compromising its period charm.
