Found were asked by the client to create a solution that would allow them to sensitively extend their existing cottage. The extension would provide additional living and bedroom space along with much needed storage and utility space allowing the property to meet the needs of their growing family. Although the property is not listed it is a good example of the local vernacular of sheep farmers cottages and, for that reason, there was significant interest from Brecon Beacons National Park Authority in the design to ensure that the building was preserved.

Working closely with the client the extension has been planned to complement the existing cottage while also providing specific framed views of the surrounding countryside that enhances the client’s relationship with the landscape. So as not to completely cover the rear elevation of the cottage the extension has been broken into two blocks; the block to the west extends the existing living space and provides views of the sunset, the block to the east contains storage, utility and the master suite. The master suite has a view to hills and sun rise in the east and a view north over the Wye valley. The space between the two blocks contains a glass link, allowing you to read the rear elevation of the cottage, and a courtyard that is protected from the prevailing westerly wind to create a sheltered sun trap. The cladding to the extension is larch stained grey to match the welsh slate roof of the cottage. The choice of timber as the cladding is in response to cladding seen on agricultural barns in the area and provides a contemporary contrast to the existing white painted stone of the cottage.
